Simranโ€™s POV

It had been ten days since weโ€™d returned from Jodhpur, and yet, every corner of our house still whispered his name.

The green dupatta Iโ€™d worn on the engagement day was still hanging on the chair in my room, untouched - maybe because every time I looked at it, I remembered the way Sarthakโ€™s eyes had softened for a second when heโ€™d seen me walk in.

Life in Karnal had gone back to its usual pace - Papa going to the office, Maa checking the household accounts, Aarav glued to his phone. But inside me, something had quietly shifted.

Iโ€™d catch myself smiling while pouring chai, or replaying the moment heโ€™d tucked that strand of hair behind my ear. It was a just small, invisible threads pulling me back to that one quiet man who rarely said much but made every word count.

---

That evening, the air was heavy with the smell of rain. Maa was folding laundry while I scrolled through my phone, pretending not to wait for his message.

And then - the phone buzzed.

Sarthak calling.

My heart jumped, traitor that it was. I cleared my throat, trying to sound normal before picking up.

โ€œHello?โ€

โ€œHi.โ€ His voice was calm, deep, familiar. โ€œAm I disturbing you?โ€

โ€œNoโ€ฆ not at all.โ€

โ€œGood,โ€ he said, a hint of relief in his tone. โ€œI wasnโ€™t sure if youโ€™d be busy.โ€

โ€œI was justโ€ฆ helping Maa,โ€ I lied.

He chuckled softly. โ€œYou sound like you were waiting for my call.โ€

My cheeks warmed up instantly. โ€œAapko kaafi confidence hai apne upar.โ€

{โ€œYou have a lot of confidence in yourself.โ€}

He laughed, the kind of laugh that wasnโ€™t loud but made you feel it anyway. โ€œMaybe because I was hoping you were.โ€

The silence that followed after that wasnโ€™t awkward - it was just full and comfortable.

โ€œSo,โ€ I said finally, โ€œhowโ€™s work?โ€

โ€œSame. Construction sites, deadlines, dust everywhere. Nothing interesting.โ€

โ€œHmm,โ€ I teased. โ€œToh phir mujhe call kyu kiya? Bore ho rahe the?โ€

{"Then why did you call me? Were you bored?"}

โ€œMaybe,โ€ he said quietly. โ€œOr maybe I missed your voice.โ€

The words landed gently, but they made my pulse quicken. I didnโ€™t know what to say.

He filled the pause himself, โ€œActually, Papa was talking to your father today. They were discussing the wedding timeline.โ€

My stomach flipped. โ€œAlready?โ€

โ€œHmm. They said maybe three months from now. Simple wedding, Karnal mein.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ It came out softer than I intended. โ€œThat soon.โ€

โ€œToo soon?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I said quickly. โ€œBasโ€ฆ itni jaldi sab ho jayega, socha nahi tha.โ€

{โ€œThatโ€ฆ I didn't think everything would happen so quickly.โ€}

He was smiling - I could feel it in his voice. โ€œYouโ€™ll have to tolerate me sooner than expected, then.โ€

โ€œDekhte hain kaun kis ko tolerate karta hai,โ€ I shot back.

{โ€œLet's see who tolerates whom.โ€}

โ€œChallenge accepted,โ€ he said.

And somehow, just like that, the heaviness in my chest melted. We talked for a long time after that - about random things. His motherโ€™s obsession with mango pickle. My brotherโ€™s annoying habits. The way Jodhpurโ€™s heat still lingered in his evenings.

Somewhere in the middle, he said softly, โ€œSimran?โ€

โ€œHm?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t talk much, youโ€™ve probably noticed.โ€

โ€œI have,โ€ I said, smiling.

โ€œItโ€™s not that I donโ€™t have things to say,โ€ he continued. โ€œItโ€™s just that I likeโ€ฆ listening more. Noticing. I think I noticed too much that day you left.โ€

My breath hitched slightly. โ€œLike what?โ€

He hesitated - just long enough to make me hold my breath.

โ€œLike how you turned back one last time when you sat in the car,โ€ he said finally. โ€œAs if you didnโ€™t want to go yet.โ€

I froze, smiling helplessly. โ€œYou noticed that?โ€

โ€œMain notice to sab karta hoon,โ€ he said quietly. โ€œBas bol nahi pata.โ€

{โ€œI notice everything, I just can't say it.โ€}

The words stayed with me long after the call ended.

---

Later that night, I sat on the terrace, the air still damp from rain. Maa and Papa were downstairs, talking about wedding dates in that half-serious, half-practical way parents do.

โ€œThree months ka time theek hai,โ€ Papa said. โ€œGhar bhi ready ho jayega.โ€

{โ€œThree months is the right time,โ€ the house will also be ready.}

Maa nodded, glancing at me. โ€œSimran ko bhi thoda time mil jayega mentally prepare karne ka.โ€

{Simran will also get some time to prepare mentally.โ€}

I smiled faintly. Mentally prepare. As if my heart hadnโ€™t already started moving toward him, one slow heartbeat at a time.

When I went back to my room, I opened my phone and typed:

Goodnight, Sarthak. And I was right - you do notice too much.

His reply came almost instantly.

Only when itโ€™s about you.

And somehow, that one line carried me through the night - soft, quiet, and enough to make me blush even in the dark.
